Wine tasting in CreteThe Blue Palace is located in Elounda, just under an hour outside of Heraklion. While you could make a day trip to Heraklion from the hotel, it’s not necessarily how I’d spend my time. Rather I loved how secluded the immediate area around Elounda was, thanks to the gorgeous views and small fishing villages. Chania, located in the western part of Crete, boasts a gorgeous Old Town, popular beaches with shallow waters, and an excellent food scene. It is also the perfect gateway to Crete’s best sandy beaches and one of the island’s most famous natural sites, the Samaria Gorge.
Incredibly scenic, if you travel to southwest Crete, don’t miss it. Voted one of the top beaches in Europe, the water is clear, turquoise and incredibly shallow, with lagoons where the kids can safely play. All of our accommodations were perfect—each of our hotel rooms had a balcony with an incredible view and the staff at each hotel was very accommodating and eager to make everything perfect. I think we must of had the best room at each of the hotels–I can’t imagine it being any better! At Hotel Europa the owner was in the lobby when we arrived, classifieds.exponentialhealth.coop he immediately recognized Takis and although a bus was checking in he personally got our room key and we didn’t have to wait.
The Valley of Amari right next to Mount Psiloritis (Crete’s highest mountain, at 2,456 meters above sea level) is a great place to start. Located in the south of Chania, it takes about an hour and a half to reach this isolated area, but the landscape is worth the trip. The history of the Jewish community strived on the island for centuries but sadly disappeared from Crete during the Nazi occupation.
Stand in awe before the towering construction of the Minoans, the Palace of Knossos. A spellbinding sight that cannot forgotten, the intensely beautiful ruins come alive as time stands still with each setting or rising of the sun. Crete is a massive island so if you plan to see as many as places as possible then you need a means of transportation. If you are adventurous and you want to see the best of Crete with your other half I believeyou should stay at the western part or in Chania town itself. You may get some extras depending on the hotel but it’s not worth it in my opinion.
